Hello from the Vendee

Spring is just arriving, and I'm waiting for the appearance of that green haze of tiny young leaves that appears on the roof of the Foret de Mervent, which confirms that winter is over.

It's wonderful to look at recipes with summer ingredients again.Favourite books start to get leafed through, like "Cooking in Provence" by Patricia Wells, "Tender" by Nigel Slater, or anything by Elisabeth David, Claudia Roden or Caroline Conran. Gennaro Contaldo has just brought out a new book "Gennaro's Easy Italian" with great pictures - oddly enough, they were taken by a certain Sam Stowell, my son.

What a wonderful movie!!! Julia Child is a spirited and strong person, who was the first woman to graduate from France’s Cordon Bleu Cooking School. Her aim was to educate American people about French cooking – especially the use of fresh produce. The widespread use of canned food in America for cooking in the 1960s appeared crazy to this passionate, larger than life woman. The similarities between Julia Child and my mother, Tonya, are uncanny. Not only are both woman great chefs that share a love of France - They are highly spirited, zany and passionate people, who deeply love cooking food, prepared from fresh produce to share with loved ones.
